1. What has the IOC decided about boxing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?
On 22 May 2019, the IOC Executive Committee adopted and released an IOC Inquiry Report on AIBA with recommendations to the IOC Session of its members to be held 24-26 June to approve undertaking actions including removing AIBA as the International Federation responsible for administering the boxing competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Although the IOC has not made a decision on these recommendations (which it has stated it will do 24-26 June), the IOC has stated that boxing will remain in the Olympics and the IOC will undertake administration of the boxing competition at Tokyo 2020.
2. What does the IOC report about boxing in Tokyo 2020 mean for Australian athletes wanting to qualify for these Olympics?
If the IOC Session of members accept the Report’s recommendations, it is currently unknown what the qualification pathway will be. The IOC has stated that it intends to hold the international 2020 Olympic Games qualification tournaments in January-May, 2020.
Therefore, the AIBA 2019 Elite Men's and Elite Women's World championships will not be part of the qualification pathway for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Boxing Australia 2019 Elite Men’s and Elite Women’s Australian Championships will be the Pre-Selection tournament for the Australian teams to the 2019 AIBA Elite Men’s World Championships and 2019 Elite Women’s World Championships.
3. Is Boxing Australia still the national federation for the Olympic pathway for boxing?
Yes, the IOC has stated that the current national federations will remain as the organisations that administer the national qualification pathway for boxing at the Olympic Games.
This means that Boxing Australia is the only Australian National Federation recognised for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Boxing qualification pathway.
