Boxing Queensland Release – Elite Boxing on Primetime TV

As the state body for boxing one of our charter activities is to grow the awareness of and opportunities within our sport. I know that I along with many in our community remain frustrated at the lack of broader coverage our sport receives.

Therefore, I am pleased to advise of a new tournament in our schedule. The “Absco Sheds Elite Boxing Championship (EBC)” is an invitational tournament involving four catchweight divisions (Male 63kg; 70kg; 78kg & Female 56kg) each with eight competitors competing over six days of activity.

The EBC will be turned into a 10 episode prime time show to be broadcast on ESPN1. This channel can be found on Foxtel (channel 508) on Fetch or in pubs and clubs across the nation.

The tournament is fully supported by Boxing Australia, and is sanctioned by Boxing Queensland, will operate under AIBA rules with all officials provided by Boxing Queensland. I met with the EBC executive this week to receive the final brief on operations, and was comforted by their clear support of operating under our rules and regulations and excited by a number of initiatives they are putting in place that will make both the live and television shows very attractive.

To have our sport on TV every week for over two months is a great outcome, and the EBC are intending on running two more series in 2018 which will provide twenty more weeks of coverage.

So, as Secretary I ask our community to support this initiative by attending the tournament in person, following their social media and tuning in when the broadcasts commence in September.
