Dear Member Associations,
I am writing to you on behalf of the Board of Boxing Australia to provide advice in relation to a proposed WBC Australian Amateur Championship to be staged August 11-13 at Bendigo, Victoria.
There are a number of relevant points and these are set out below:
BAL Constitution
In regard to the proposed WBC tournament, BAL Constitution clauses 2.3, 3.2 and 3.3 forbid BAL and by extension, its Member Associations, from associating with a promoter who is connected to a professional boxing organisation other than AIBA, WSB, or APB.
BAL Regulations Regarding Prohibited Conduct
This type of tournament is in breach of BAL’s Prohibited Conduct Regulations clauses 4 (b) and 6 (b).
AIBA Technical Rules
Any boxer taking part in this tournament would be in breach of Regulation 2.2.2.
AIBA’s Advised Position
AIBA’s Legal Director has advised BAL that it may not be associated with this tournament.
Conclusion:
All Member Associations are advised that this tournament is not sanctioned by BAL and that any registered boxer, coach, or official taking part, risks disciplinary action.
Boxing Australia has written to the promoter of this tournament, Mr Hosking, and he has been informed that the tournament is not sanctioned and that any boxer, coach or official taking part risks disciplinary action.
It has also been pointed out to Mr Hosking that as a registered coach with BVI, he may be the subject to disciplinary action by BAL should this tournament go ahead.
Action:
Each Member Associations should take all reasonable steps to advise their athletes, coaches and officials of this situation and ensure that this is communicated through your web site and related communication channels.
